Rationale

My topic for this assignment was destinations where someone could go read a book and feel relaxed.  Because of this topic, I tried to convey a simple environment that is calm but has a unique niche that makes it stand out.  For this I have to use the grid to create negative space between the typography and the images on the page so there was nothing that tried to complicate anything on the layout.  This means the typography had to be simple but also pleasant to look at.  The main thing I learnt from this project was that the image is not the only thing on the page. The grid, typography, and image need to work together to create a good presentation.  For any future project, I would work on both the typography and illustration at the same time instead of concentrating on one.  Which means that I will have to pay close attention to the typography and grid.

March 31st

Showed my brochure to Lee today and received some very good feedback towards my project which I then proceeded to make some important changes towards the layout of the brochure.  The main thing that changes was removing the circles with photographs and enlarging the main illustration, this while creating more negative space on the page also gave the image a more concentration and was no longer too busy,  changes were also made to the map page in order to remove lines but also add more to it.
And last but not least the map and cover's text were changes so the theme was more obvious to the audience.

March 30th

After a long week I have finally completed my brochure

For my final page i decided to use my old illustrations and recycle them into bookmarks.  This also relates back to the theme of books and create an interactive idea within the brochure.

Three of the layout pages images are now complete

Just need to add the text now

March 27th

I have spent the last two days non stop working on my new brochure pages making sure that the layout and the text BOTH work together with the illustration to create a harmonic page.  I have also used my mentioned artist models and created new illustrations for the layout.

These Illustrations help provide a sense of perspective and allow people too actually see how big or how small each destination is.
Along with this i have also completed two of the layout pages

Realised I forgot to post the images of the failed illustration

Again the images just took up an unnecessarily large amount of room and  were too flat and bland to even finish.

25th of March

I have to redo my brochure,  the layout is not allowing the text to sit nicely and the images that are being drawn are too flat and not interesting.  I have thought up a different idea for my Brochure which also includes a map and something for my extra page.  For this brochure's design i am planning on using the artist model Giulia Pex because of his used of combining illustrations and photographs.  I have three photographs which would work with the artist model and also make a big part in show in the brochure the most important differences between the three destinations.

March 12th -18th

This week I experimented with layout and designs for the brochure pages.  At the moment with the idea I have for my brochure i'm not sure how to combine the layout and illustration I am planning on using.  I am also struggling with what to do for the extra brochure page as well as the map page.  In class we talked about grids again so we experimented with cutting out text and placing it on a grid to see what works and what does not for the visual layout.  I am a bit behind because of me putting so much time in illustrations that some seem to work with layout, I think i might have to change the image to fit on the page differently for the layout to work.  But the classes we had this week did really help with text/type/and font and its importance in graphic design.  I learnt so much about typography today and how difficult it actually is.
Here an example of an illustrations that i'm working on for one of the layouts

March 10th - 11th

Today in class we discussed the drawing mockups we did for homework and how they should be converted to a thumb nailing layout which uses a grid.  We also discussed the visual language formula and how it is vital for when doing a visual presentation like a brochure.  The visual language formula of course came hand in hand with the imagery in grids and how structure is very important when working on any type of layout.  Im still not quite sure about how to present a layout, especially with an illustration so I will just have to see how it goes and talk tot he teacher if i need to.
I have also spent a large amount of this week working on illustrations for my brochure.

9th March

Decided to use the Wellington Central library as my third destination and went to do some research for that today.  So far each location I have chosen to concentrate on have had some very big differences and the Wellington Central Libraries definitely has some characteristics that make it different from the other two destinations.  This of course mainly referring to the size and amount of space within the building.  The building always has bright natural light coming into it and one size of the building is a large window.  The library also contains far more options of books compared to the other places and has a lot of information to offer.

Library also has a colour theme of blues and matallic and could have an industrial theme.

March 4th

Recently continued my research by visiting the library and just sat and absorbed the atmosphere.  Based on my experience and also the photographs the Library is a dim and calm destination that is a good place for groups of people to socialised and not just one person on their own.

March 2nd

I have decided that i am going to do my theme on books for my assignment.  I wanted to choose three different and unique destinations that all contains different types of environments, books, and atmosphere.  The main idea I have for this assignment is to show three different destinations that help someone feel relaxed if alone.  The three destinations I decided on were the Graphic Comics book store, The Library lounge and bar, and possibly a public library.  After finding out my theme, I went into town and researched the Graphic Comic Book Store and take pictures of different areas of the building.  I also made two short videos to record the sound because i didn't have a voice recorder at the time.

Here are two examples of pictures that help express the destinations use of bright colours and how the store is narrow and small.

Also I am thinking of using Mike Mignola as an artist model because of his used of black line art and simplified details on figures
February 24 - 25th  - Week 1

First update of the blog
Yesterday we had our first class in VCD and we were introduced to our assignment, we went into groups and brainstormed different destinations and activities.  After class we had to choose three different destinations/activities.  At the moment I am deciding between either a “think geek” theme using the destinations Armageddon, Comic Book Store, and Weta Studios.  Or maybe a nightclub theme but thats seem like a very commonly used theme.

Edit: Talked to teacher about the “think geek” idea but was told the destinations were too different so I have to think of a different theme
